Buying A Wireless Phone

There are three kinds of phones: portable, transportable, and mobile. Portable phones are small, hand-held phones which can fit in a pocket, briefcase or purse. Using an attachment, many can be plugged into an automobile cigarette lighter to save battery power. Transportable phones are basically car phones with the handset, antenna and battery packaged together with a rechargeable battery in a carrying case. They can plug into a car's cigarette lighter or operate off a portable battery pack for use anywhere. Mobile phones are installed in your car and used with an antenna on the outside of the car. These phones are powered by the car's battery. Consider the following suggestions while looking for a wireless phone.

  • To take advantage of special discounted phones (some are offered free), a customer will most likely have to sign at least a one year service lease.
  • Get the type of phone best-suited for your calling needs. For example, if you are only going to use the phone while driving, get a mobile phone. If you need a phone that travels easily with you, get a portable, hand-held phone.
  • Battery-life is longer and power levels are stronger with a mobile phone. Batteries for portables need to be recharged.
  • Try the phones out to ensure you are happy with the size, weight, and quality.
  • If you desire certain features, ensure that the phone is equipped. For example, a hands-free microphone for a car phone so you can talk and drive, memory dialing to preprogram numbers, radio mute will automatically turn down the volume when you make a call, auto answer will pick up the phone after two rings, voice mail, etc.
  • Look for the CTIA Certification Seal. When you see it, you will know you're looking at a product that meets or exceeds industry operating, security and safety standards.
